This is something that a lot of people struggle to understand, - and that’s not surprising as when you try and get the ‘official’ definition of a business coach, there simply isn’t only one. There are plenty of definitions of what business coaching IS, but not really much about what a business coach DOES.
Mostly because it’s a very personal thing.
And it is linked very closely to personal brand.
Which means that every coaching relationship is different.
To give you a version of what a business coach does based on how I do it – it’s pretty simple.
I help my clients clarify what their vision is for their business (their ), how to define their personal brand to support their vision (their WHO), and what needs to happen to create an environment where people want to trust them & want to work with them (their HOW).
Basically, I get inside their head and help them sort all this out, taking them through a process to move their business from where it is NOW to where they WANT it to be.
I also help them identify goals, plan to achieve them & hold them accountable – and that’s key point number one:
A business coach creates actionable plans to move your business forward.
And they do that by getting to know you, your brand & your business, as well as your goals, hopes & dreams and frustrations too. A business coach has years of experience to share with you, and they bring that to the table each time you meet up – weekly or monthly – they are right there in your corner, ready to help you figure out what your goals are and how to reach them.
But what they don’t do is do it for you – which takes us to point number two:
They create accountability.
A business coach is not a consultant that you pay to do the work for you in your business. They are there to keep you focussed on your goals and why they are important – they will motivate you to keep going, and help you to make sure you are still going in the right direction. And if you are not, they will help you choose the right path forward.
They are a sounding board, and a fresh pair of eyes that focusses on your business rather than being in it.
